See your match score & applyThe World Bank Group’s Young Professionals Program offers exceptional professionals the opportunity to apply their expertise and contribute to development challenges. This role focuses on structuring sustainable finance transactions and scaling climate solutions within the Climate Change Department, supporting the World Bank Group's mission to create a world free of poverty on a livable planet.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to structuring sustainable finance transactions, expanding the offering, and scaling successful solutions across sectors and markets.
- Translate climate priorities into practical operational and investment solutions across IBRD/IDA and IFC, including sustainable finance approaches and proportionate application of Paris Alignment, climate co-benefits, and climate risk.
- Advance climate outcome measurement through technical and operational pilots for net GHG and resilience beneficiaries, and coherent approaches to gross, net, and financed emissions, coordinating with other stakeholders.
- Contribute to One Climate’s integrated adaptation and resilience agenda by linking physical climate-risk intelligence, adaptation finance, outcome metrics, and origination to ready-to-use solutions, including adaptation-focused sustainability-linked finance.
- Support material, complex, innovative, or precedent-setting operations and transactions; identify climate risks and opportunities; and contribute to structuring credible sustainable finance instruments and frameworks, including KPIs, targets, and other transaction features.
- Partner with operational, sector, financial, legal, treasury, data, and technology teams to develop and test new financial products and digital or AI-enabled tools; codify lessons into guidance and training that support consistent delivery and replication at scale.
- Support One Climate’s WBG-wide and global leadership through research, MDB harmonization, stakeholder engagement, and coordinated briefs for management and the Board.
- Manage workstreams and contribute to cross-institutional and country assignments under the YPP rotation model.
Requirements
- Minimum of a Master’s degree in climate science, economics, engineering, hydrology, geography, environmental or data science, statistics, public policy, finance, development studies, or a closely related field, completed by the start date; interdisciplinary training spanning climate risk, development, and decision-making is highly desirable.
- 2-6 years of relevant professional or applied research experience in climate adaptation and resilience, climate or disaster-risk analytics, development policy, public investment, infrastructure or sector planning, adaptation finance, or related operational work.
- Strong grounding in the climate-risk framework—hazard, exposure, vulnerability, adaptive capacity, and residual risk—and in contemporary approaches to adaptation planning, risk management, and robust decision-making under uncertainty.
- Demonstrated quantitative capability in one or more of the following: climate-impact or catastrophe-risk modeling; probabilistic, scenario, spatial, or geospatial analysis; econometrics and causal inference; socioeconomic or fiscal-risk analysis; optimization; or cost-benefit, cost-effectiveness, and distributional analysis.
- Proficiency in assembling, validating, integrating, and interpreting climate, hazard, exposure, asset, household, firm, and macroeconomic data; practical experience with reproducible analytical workflows and relevant programming, statistical, GIS, remote-sensing, cloud, or applied-AI tools is desirable.
- Experience translating technical evidence into country, sector, or system diagnostics and actionable policy, regulatory, institutional, planning, or public-investment recommendations; familiarity with development operations, sovereign financing instruments, private-sector solutions, or adaptation-finance structures is an advantage.
- Ability to assess adaptation options and portfolios across multiple objectives and uncertainties, including effectiveness, economic and financial viability, equity, feasibility, maladaptation risk, scalability, and measurable resilience outcomes.
- Strong analytical judgment, intellectual curiosity, client orientation, and ability to frame complex problems, communicate uncertainty clearly, synthesize quantitative and qualitative evidence, and develop practical solutions for decision-makers.
- Demonstrated commitment to international development and the WBG’s mission; ability to collaborate across disciplines, institutions, and public- and private-sector teams, and manage competing deadlines.
- Fluency in English; proficiency in additional languages is an advantage.
- Experience in developing-country contexts is an advantage.
