AI Software Engineer Lead

Lead the implementation and advancement of AI and ML initiatives within WHO/Europe, developing applications using modern software engineering practices and supporting technical divisions with innovative digital solutions. Manage AI projects from design to deployment, mentor teams, and ensure ethical AI application.

Responsibilities

• Lead definition and implementation of AI/ML initiatives in WHO/Europe, setting project priorities and work plans.
• Set technical direction and drive implementation for data integration and automation of AI-related activities including real-time data ingestion, processing, dashboards, and visualizations.
• Design and implement AI prototypes and pilots, iterating towards scalable solutions.
• Oversee full development cycle of AI projects from data acquisition, modeling, testing to deployment and monitoring.
• Guide development of internal and external applications using modern frameworks and technologies, ensuring best software engineering practices.
• Develop and manage cloud-based solutions to support AI/ML workloads, optimizing for performance and cost-effectiveness.
• Lead and mentor a team of AI and software professionals, collaborating with other teams to integrate AI solutions.
• Manage large datasets for training and testing AI models, ensuring ongoing performance and accuracy with iterative improvements.
• Establish quality assurance protocols for AI systems.
• Monitor and maintain performance of AI applications post-deployment.
• Stay updated with latest AI/ML and software engineering trends and advancements.
• Foster a culture of innovation and continuous learning within the team.
• Advocate for ethical AI application including data privacy, model transparency, and fairness.
• Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders to gather requirements, report progress, and explain AI concepts.
• Manage team resources including budgets for projects and tools to ensure efficient delivery of AI solutions.
• Identify and mitigate risks associated with AI projects including technical feasibility, data security, and compliance with laws and regulations.
• Liaise with IMT in HQ to ensure compliance with WHO policies and standards.
• Promote high staff performance through teamwork, efficiency, innovation, and critical thinking.
• Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

• Advanced university degree in software engineering, computer science or other relevant discipline.
• Certifications in DevOps, React, Python, or any other relevant areas are desirable.
• At least seven years of relevant, progressive experience including software engineering and architecture, developing Cloud-native applications, deploying AI models into the Cloud, integrating generative AI solutions, developing automated analytical pipelines, and managing complex applications with front-end and database technologies.
• Theoretical understanding of algorithms, data structures and computational complexity and system design.
• Proficient understanding and practical experience in AI/ML techniques, frameworks, and methodologies including deployment and maintenance of AI/ML models in production environments.
• Strong proficiency in modern programming languages such as Python, Java, or JavaScript/Node, and expertise with AI-related libraries and APIs.
• Proven experience designing and implementing AI solutions in Azure, including Azure AI Search, indexers, indexes, and skillsets.
• Proficiency in developing and maintaining custom skillsets for enhancing search functionalities and integrating with generative AI.
• Solid understanding of DevOps principles and tools for CI/CD, containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience in data engineering and working with large data sets including data cleaning, analysis, and feature engineering.
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to translate complex requirements into actionable design and code.
• Ability to identify and manage own emotions and help others do the same.
• Expert knowledge of English is essential; intermediate knowledge of French, Russian, German is desirable.
