The Data Engineer will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining data platforms, cloud infrastructure, and integrations supporting WFP's global individual giving programme. The role includes developing data pipelines, cloud-native services, and ensuring data quality and operational scalability in a fully remote setting.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the implementation of IG data strategies aligning with corporate data strategies and standards
  • Review existing data flows across Individual Giving, identify gaps and inefficiencies, and design solutions
  • Consult with enterprise architecture team to reduce overlaps and optimize reuse of corporate data assets
  • Align warehouse implementation with broader IG technical and fundraising architecture
  • Support evolution of data and integration architectures, including AI and cloud-native approaches
  • Own and drive end-to-end implementation of the data warehouse including modelling and schema design
  • Build and maintain scalable ELT pipelines consolidating data from multiple sources
  • Lead implementation of new data integrations with agency feeds, external partners, and vendor platforms
  • Design and implement data transformation pipelines for performance measurement and reporting
  • Integrate data from new acquisition channels and geographic markets
  • Design technical solutions for data synchronization across fundraising systems
  • Implement data observability and integrity checks with automated monitoring and alerting
  • Own root-cause resolution of warehouse-level data issues and document solutions
  • Build robust, self-healing pipelines with exception handling and validation
  • Maintain data lineage documentation and data dictionaries
  • Ensure data handling complies with WFP policies and privacy standards
  • Support development and maintenance of reporting capabilities and collaborate with Business Intelligence colleagues
  • Develop self-service reporting capabilities for fundraising and operational teams
  • Provide resilience across critical reporting activities
  • Contribute to design and maintenance of technical environments for data validation and QA
  • Support QA processes ensuring accurate and complete data flows
  • Act as primary technical contact for data engineering needs across Individual Giving
  • Translate analytical and operational requirements into technical specifications
  • Support IG Tech & Ops Lead with ad hoc data analysis and knowledge sharing
  • Work in coordination with IG tech team, Business Intelligence, CRM and other technical teams
  • Develop internal capability by mentoring colleagues and promoting knowledge sharing

Requirements

  • University degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Information Systems, or a related technical field
  • 4–5 years of experience in data engineering, data platform engineering, analytics engineering, or closely related technical disciplines
  • Proven experience building and maintaining data pipelines and ETL/ELT workflows in a production environment
  • Experience developing dashboards and reports using BI tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Looker, and similar
  • Experience working with fundraising, CRM, or marketing data is a strong advantage
  • Experience designing and implementing integrations across multiple systems using APIs, middleware platforms, managed services, or bespoke engineering approaches
  • Experience evolving data warehouse architectures within live operational environments, balancing modernization with continuity of reporting and operational needs
  • Experience in UN or international development organizations is an asset
  • Strong proficiency in SQL; experience with Python or similar scripting languages for data transformation
  • Hands-on experience with cloud-based data platforms, particularly Redshift and associated AWS services used to support data engineering and integration workloads
  • Familiarity with technologies supporting server-side data collection and activation (e.g. server-side GTM, Conversion APIs, event collection architectures) would be advantageous
  • Familiarity with modern data stack tools such as dbt, Airflow, Azure Devops, or similar orchestration and transformation tools
  • Strong ability to translate complex data requirements into clear, reliable, and user-friendly dashboard outputs
  • Solid understanding of data modelling principles, data governance, and data quality management
  • Knowledge of GDPR and data privacy principles as applied to fundraising and CRM data
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills, with a strong eye for detail
  • Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment, managing multiple deliverables and deadlines
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience providing technical leadership, mentoring, or guidance to less experienced colleagues would be advantageous
  • Demonstrates a proactive, solutions-oriented mindset committed to delivering results and continuous improvement
  • Excellent written and spoken English is required
  • Knowledge of another official UN language would be a plus
