The Translator & Interpreter is responsible for translating documents and interpreting at meetings for UNRWA, ensuring accuracy and precision in both Arabic and English. The role includes editing and proofreading official documents and supporting communications across various departments.

Responsibilities

  • Translate documents, reports, and website content from English into Arabic and vice versa for internal or external use, ensuring accuracy and precision.
  • Act as interpreter at internal and external meetings, press briefings and other official occasions as required.
  • Assist the Head of Creative Digital Multimedia Communications with editing of UNRWA’s official Arab language materials; collaborate with the Communications Division’s Arabic desk in these tasks.
  • Edit and proofread agency-wide documents, including sensitive documents from the Executive Office and other departments such as Legal Affairs, Human Resources, Ethics Office, Ombudsman, Protection and Neutrality unit.
  • Assist departments in overseeing the final production of their key documents, bulletins and other issuances.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Communications, including support to other offices or departments in the Agency.

Requirements

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) from an accredited educational institution in English, translation and interpretation or a related field.
  • At least seven years of experience in translation and interpretation work from Arabic into English and vice-versa, of which three years were in an international organization.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English and Arabic is required.
  • Knowledge and experience of using computer with proficiency in word processing in English and Arabic.
  • Candidates must currently reside in the duty station (Amman, Jordan) and have authorization to work there.
  • Previous experience at a UN agency or international non-governmental organization is desirable.
  • Knowledge of contemporary Middle East political and cultural affairs is desirable.
  • Good understanding of the context of Palestine refugees and UNRWA operations is desirable.
