Mechanical Design Engineer (Internally Only)

The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for detailed mechanical design for building projects including schools, hospitals, clinics, shelters, warehouses and rehousing projects in accordance with UNRWA's needs and standards. The role involves preparing tender documents, exploring new technologies, providing technical advice, liaising with construction teams, and assisting in supervising consultants to ensure quality and compliance.

Responsibilities

• Carries out detailed mechanical design for building projects including schools, hospitals, clinics, shelters, warehouses and rehousing projects in accordance with Agency’s needs, policies, design criteria, standards, local and international codes of practice; maintains and applies existing standard details of mechanical works utilizing relevant software and reviews drawings prepared by Technical Assistants/CAD.
• Contributes to the tender documents preparation related to mechanical works, including particular specifications to cover special design needs; identifies non-standard items, to improve the quality of implemented works, and writes relevant description to be included in the Bill of Quantities (BoQs).
• Searches for emerging models and exploring technologies to identify new materials and techniques to achieve better results and meet changing requirements; participates in studies and technical activities satisfying environmental aspects, including the incorporation of green elements in design, and safety needs and achieve the most cost effective, reliable, and technical solution.
• Provides technical advice and carries out special design for the alteration works of the Agency premises; writes technical reports, particularly on mechanical aspects and building system inspections, including remediation requirements.
• Liaises with Construction teams on mechanical design issues arising during implementation period; updates mechanical designs drawings to incorporate changes included in the as-built drawings as received from the Fields to reflect on ground conditions and evolvements; maintains these drawings based on the relevant Technical Instructions.
• Coordinates and liaises with other designers, to optimize designs in response to mechanical needs and maintaining soundness and integrity of the building at minimum cost; makes recommendation for improvement of standards and procedures.
• Assists in drafting terms of references for consultants related to mechanical works and supervising their work to ensure adherence with design criteria, standards, and procedures; provide substantive input on various types of reports including weekly and monthly progress reports and ad-hoc reports.
• Perform other duties as may be assigned.

Requirements

• A university degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited university/institution.
• At least four years of relevant experience of which at least two years in design including public buildings and developmental projects is required.
• Experience with mechanical design software and computer aided design, such as AutoCAD and other software are required.
• Knowledge on relevant “greening” approaches and protection needs is desired.
