The Driver provides reliable and safe driving services for the UNOCHA office in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The role requires discretion, integrity, responsibility, and knowledge of protocol and security issues, supporting humanitarian coordination efforts in complex emergency contexts.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the official vehicle assigned to the office safely and reliably.
  • Collect and distribute mail, documents, and other items.
  • Run errands with local authorities and banks.
  • Receive official visitors (consultants and experts on mission) at the airport and facilitate immigration and customs formalities if necessary.
  • Ensure visitors' transportation during their missions.
  • Be responsible for daily vehicle maintenance including checking oil, water, battery, brakes, tires, etc.
  • Perform minor repairs in case of breakdowns and arrange for major repairs.
  • Keep the vehicle clean and maintain the logbook with official trips, daily mileage, fuel consumption, oil checks, lubrication, and technical sheet updates.
  • Ensure the presence of a first aid kit and spare parts in the vehicle.
  • Support cost reduction through proper vehicle use and maintenance.
  • Provide logistical support for seminars and workshops related to office activities.
  • Ensure all required actions and formalities are taken in case of accidents.
  • Perform any other related tasks assigned by the Chief of Office that do not exceed the driver's skills and competencies.

Requirements

  • High School certificate required.
  • Minimum two years of relevant professional experience as a driver with a good record of safe driving.
  • Experience with small vehicle repairs and knowledge of good driving rules.
  • At least two years of professional experience within the United Nations system, particularly with OCHA, or an international NGO is desirable.
  • Knowledge of the duty station (Eastern DRC) is an advantage.
  • Experience driving armored vehicles is desirable.
  • Valid driving license required.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work in a multiethnic, multiracial, and multicultural environment.
  • Ability to work under stress in unstable situations.
  • Ability to perform minor vehicle repairs and supervise major repairs in authorized garages.
  • Basic computer skills (office software).
  • Fluency in French, both oral and written, is required.
  • Knowledge of English and/or another UN official language is an asset.
  • Knowledge of local languages is an advantage.
  • A post-primary education is minimum; a diploma in mechanics and/or an automobile certificate is a considerable asset.
