Environmental and Social Safeguard Specialist

The Environmental and Social Safeguard Specialist (ESSS) will prepare an Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) for the project “Skills for Decent Employment in Zambian Artisanal and Small-scale Mining in the Critical Mineral Value Chains” in accordance with UNIDO's Environmental and Social Safeguards Policy and Procedures (ESSPP), relevant national legislation and international good practice. The ESSS will ensure that environmental and social risks and impacts associated with project activities are adequately identified, assessed, managed, monitored and reported throughout project implementation.

Responsibilities

• Prepare an Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) for the project in line with UNIDO ESSPP, national legislation and international good practice.
• Assess and analyze potential environmental and social risks and impacts associated with project activities including training institutions, community outreach, technical assistance to ASM operators, and provision of grants and equipment.
• Conduct desk review of existing literature, project documents, national regulations and UNIDO policies.
• Conduct one field visit to potential project sites including ASM operations and training centres in selected provinces.
• Develop cost-effective measures to minimize, mitigate or eliminate adverse environmental and social impacts.
• Ensure environmental and social risks are adequately identified, assessed, managed, monitored and reported throughout project implementation.
• Support capacity building and stakeholder engagement related to environmental and social safeguards.
• Coordinate with project delivery manager and project teams at UNIDO HQ and in the field.

Requirements

• Master's degree in environmental science, social sciences, engineering, or related field.
• Minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience in environmental and social safeguards, preferably in mining or extractive industries.
• Experience in preparing Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMP) and conducting environmental and social risk assessments.
• Knowledge of UNIDO's Environmental and Social Safeguards Policy and Procedures (ESSPP) and relevant national legislation.
• Experience working with artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sectors is desirable.
• Ability to conduct field visits and stakeholder consultations.
• Strong analytical and report writing skills.
• Ability to work independently and in coordination with project teams.
• Fluency in English is required.
