The Communication Officer supports the production of communication products and materials to advance the country communication strategy, regional and global campaigns, and resource mobilization. The role involves media relations, monitoring and evaluation of communication efforts, and coordination of special events and partnerships to promote UNICEF's advocacy objectives in Ukraine.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure timely production and follow-up of communication products and materials to support country communication strategy, regional and global campaigns, and resource mobilization.
  • Implement tasks in the country and field office communication work plan and strategy as assigned.
  • Gather content and coverage of relevant country efforts to identify effective country programme activities and results.
  • Support production of advocacy and communication materials such as briefing notes, images, videos, and web pages.
  • Assist in drafting and editing articles, press releases, human interest stories and other advocacy/information materials for web-based and traditional media.
  • Follow up on production of advocacy and communication materials and oversee qualitative aspects such as quality control, translations, and graphic design.
  • Maintain an up-to-date documentation centre for communication materials including publications, press releases, photographs, audio-visual materials, and web resources.
  • Recommend appropriate information and communication materials for media and advocacy activities.
  • Maintain and update media relations contact list/database and ensure rapid and accurate information dissemination to media.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining collaboration with mass media and other groups essential to advocacy and communication objectives.
  • Prepare background communication and promotional materials for media briefings and visits of special interest groups.
  • Assist in planning, logistics and administrative arrangements for media and special interest group visits.
  • Monitor and evaluate use and effectiveness of media materials and maintain a library of coverage.
  • Conduct regular monitoring and evaluation activities according to the work plan to ensure maximum impact and continuous improvement of communication efforts.
  • Assist in coordinating audience research and compiling and analysing relevant data.
  • Monitor public perception of UNICEF in the country and recommend actions to maintain a positive image.
  • Provide feedback to Communications team in Kyiv and GCA on use and appropriateness of global communication materials.
  • Undertake lessons learned review of communication experiences as directed by supervisor.
  • Maintain and develop contact lists of individuals, groups, organizations and fora essential to advocacy and communication objectives.
  • Help organize and generate public support for special events and activities to promote country programme goals.
  • Monitor and document effectiveness of working with celebrities, partners and special events.
  • Prepare background communication and promotional materials for briefings and visits of media, Goodwill Ambassadors, donors, National Committee representatives and other special interest groups.

Requirements

  • Bachelor or equivalent (First Level University Degree) in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations/Communication or any other related fields.
  • Minimum two years practical professional work experience in communication, print and broadcast media, or interactive digital media.
  • Field work experience and background or familiarity with emergency situations is required.
  • Skills in communication research planning, interactive digital media, computer systems, emergency communication, communication strategy, emergency preparedness.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is desirable.
  • Relevant experience in a UN system agency or organization is considered an asset.
  • Relevant experience at country level, particularly in development, fragile settings and humanitarian contexts, is desirable.
