Chief Health

The Chief Health leads and manages all stages of health programmes in Nepal, including maternal, neonatal, child survival, adolescent mental health, non-communicable diseases, and emergency preparedness. The role involves strategic planning, programme delivery, team leadership, and partnership building to achieve sustainable health outcomes aligned with UNICEF's Strategic Plans.

Responsibilities

• Provide managerial leadership for the health team and programmes in Nepal.
• Lead programme development, planning, and strategic formulation for health initiatives including maternal, neonatal, child survival, adolescent mental health, non-communicable diseases, and emergency preparedness.
• Manage programme implementation, monitoring, and delivery of results aligned with UNICEF’s Strategic Plans and results-based management approaches.
• Provide advisory services and technical support to government and partners in health sector programming.
• Advocate, network, and build partnerships with national and international stakeholders to support health programmes.
• Promote innovation, knowledge management, and capacity building within the health team and among partners.

Requirements

• An advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in public health, nutrition and dietetics, pediatric health/pediatrics, general medicine, family health, health research, global/international health, health policy and/or management, environmental health sciences, biostatistics, socio-medical sciences, health education, epidemiology, or another relevant health-related technical field.
• A minimum of eight years of professional experience in health and programme management, public health, maternal, child and newborn health, immunization, mental health, health systems strengthening, health emergency and humanitarian preparedness, health policy, monitoring and evaluation, partnership development, or another relevant health-related field.
• Familiarity with Public Health, Leadership, Monitoring and Evaluation, Fundraising, Nutrition Planning, and Quality Reports.
• Proficiency in English is required.
• Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset. Nepali language is considered as an advantage.
• Experience working in developing countries, particularly in low-middle income countries, fragile or humanitarian contexts, is considered an asset.
• Relevant experience in a UN system agency or international organization is considered an asset.
• Demonstrated experience in developing and planning health and relevant sector programmes and monitoring implementation at national and subnational levels.
• Proven track record in providing managerial leadership to staff in a country office, as well as strong technical leadership across field offices.
• Proven experience in influencing national and subnational plans and budgets through upstream engagement with government counterparts in highly decentralized political contexts.
• Proven experience in establishing strategic partnerships and mobilizing resources to support health programmes, including engagement with national and international stakeholders such as the private sector and academia.
• Strong thought leadership in the health sector and demonstrated ability to draft and compile high-quality reports in English.
