See your match score & applyThe Senior Communications Associate supports the implementation of communications strategies within the area of responsibility, focusing on news and media relations, multimedia content production, social media engagement, public outreach, and fundraising. The role involves strategic partnership building, content creation, campaign support, and strengthening communications capacity to enhance UNHCR's visibility and resource mobilization in China.
Responsibilities
- Support the implementation of communications strategies for countries, situations and special projects within the AoR
- Help identify thematic priorities and target audiences to meet UNHCR's communications objectives
- Monitor news and popular trends to insert UNHCR's messaging into ongoing conversations
- Identify key moments for proactive communications
- Forge strategic partnerships with individuals and organizations to produce and promote UNHCR content and messaging
- Support the development of news-driven and authoritative content to lead the narrative on forced displacement
- Create emotive storytelling to generate empathy and mobilize action
- Support the development of strategies for content distribution to maximize impact
- Monitor the implementation of communications projects and adjust accordingly
- Assist in research, preparation, editing and production of professional media and communications materials
- Maintain and upgrade communications skills and review media impact results for learning
- Support the implementation of campaigns, events and other initiatives
- Undertake missions and field trips with media and official visitors as required
- Support the identification and management of risks impacting objectives in the area of responsibility
- Perform other related duties as required
Requirements
- 4 years relevant experience with High School Diploma; or 2 years relevant work experience with Bachelor or equivalent or higher
- Certificates and/or Licenses in Journalism, Social Sciences, Humanities or related fields
- Excellent computer skills and knowledge of MS Office applications
- Excellent drafting skills
- Experience implementing communications strategies (desirable)
- Professional writing and editing skills (desirable)
- Experience working on advocacy campaigns (desirable)
- Knowledge of English and UN working language of the duty station if not English
- Proven ability to translate complex humanitarian issues into compelling, audience-centered narratives
- Demonstrated expertise in strategic communications, branding, storytelling, and digital outreach
- Strong track record of developing impactful campaigns that enhance public engagement, strengthen organizational reputation, and support resource mobilization
- Excellent stakeholder management skills
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with private sector partners, media, agencies, and internal teams
- Creative, strategic, and adaptable with strong understanding of emerging communication trends and digital platforms
- Strong interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and a proactive, solutions-oriented approach
- Ability to provide senior-level communications advice in a dynamic and competitive environment
- Bachelor of Arts in Communication (required), International Relations, Journalism, or Political Science
- HCR Learning Program - UNHCR certification
