The Protection Associate monitors protection standards and operational procedures in protection delivery, providing functional support to information management and programme staff. The role involves coordinating protection responses, mainstreaming protection methodologies, liaising with authorities and partners, and ensuring populations of concern are involved in decisions affecting them.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor political, social, economic and cultural developments impacting protection environment
  • Apply International and National Law and UN/UNHCR and IASC policies and standards consistently
  • Provide comments on legislation related to populations of concern
  • Advise populations of concern on protection issues and liaise with authorities for documentation issuance
  • Assist in eligibility and status determination for populations of concern
  • Contribute to measures to identify, prevent and reduce statelessness
  • Contribute to country-level child protection and education plans
  • Monitor Standard Operating Procedures for protection and solutions activities
  • Manage individual protection cases including GBV and child protection cases
  • Monitor and intervene in cases of refoulement, expulsion and other protection incidents
  • Assist in identifying durable solutions such as voluntary repatriation, local integration and resettlement
  • Contribute to design, implementation and evaluation of protection related programming with partners
  • Facilitate effective information management with disaggregated data on populations of concern
  • Participate in initiatives to strengthen national protection legislation and procedures
  • Assist supervisor in prioritizing populations of concern for interviews and protection support
  • Assist supervisor in enforcing compliance of partners with global protection policies and standards
  • Submit individual payment requests for populations of concern for approval
  • Support risk identification and management in area of responsibility
  • Perform other related duties as required

Requirements

  • 3 years relevant experience with High School Diploma; or 2 years relevant work experience with Bachelor or equivalent or higher
  • Certificates and/or Licenses in International Law, Political Science or other related field
  • Knowledge of English and Spanish (UN working language of the duty station)
  • IT-Computer Literacy
  • Knowledge of Refugee Protection Principles and Framework
  • Knowledge of protection-related guidelines, standards and indicators
  • Ability to apply International and National Law and applicable UN/UNHCR and IASC policy, standards and codes of conduct
  • Experience in providing advice on protection issues to populations of concern
  • Experience in conducting eligibility and status determination for populations of concern
  • Experience in managing individual protection cases including GBV and child protection
  • Ability to contribute to child protection and education plans as part of protection strategy
  • Experience in monitoring Standard Operating Procedures for protection activities
  • Ability to facilitate effective information management through disaggregated data provision
  • Experience in liaising with authorities and partners on protection doctrine and policy
  • Ability to assist in prioritizing populations of concern for interview, counselling and protection support
