The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is seeking a Data Support Intern to assist with data management and quality assurance tasks related to the Global Quality of Life Index. The internship is full-time, remote, and based within the GMT+0 to GMT+6 time zones, focusing on data cleaning, processing, survey review, and technical support.

Responsibilities

  • Support data cleaning, processing, organization, and review activities related to the Quality of Life Index.
  • Assist with data entry, dataset management, and basic validation processes.
  • Support organization and maintenance of datasets, spreadsheets, and related documentation.
  • Assist in identifying inconsistencies, missing values, and data quality issues.
  • Review localized and translated survey forms for consistency, formatting, and completeness.
  • Support quality checks related to multilingual survey materials and datasets.
  • Assist with survey-related technical and administrative follow-up tasks, as required.
  • Support routine data quality checks and documentation updates.
  • Assist in preparing basic tables, summaries, and data outputs.
  • Provide miscellaneous technical and backstopping support to the Quality of Life Initiative team, as required.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent), or have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, including willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Preferred areas of study: Currently enrolled in, or recently completed, a degree in data science, statistics, urban studies, development studies, GIS, economics, geography, or a related field.
  • Strong skills in data cleaning, processing, and analysis required.
  • Strong skills with spreadsheets, pivot tables, and data management tools required.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify inconsistencies in datasets and survey materials.
  • Familiarity with GIS shapefiles or spatial datasets is an asset.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Prior experience in data support, research, or analytical roles is desirable.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; additional UN language abilities desirable.
  • Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience but must have a field of study closely related to the internship.
  • Applicants must provide official proof of their academic status or degree.
  • Experience in data cleaning, processing, and analysis is required.
  • Proficiency in spreadsheet software (e.g. Microsoft Excel), including formulas, pivot tables, and data management functions, is required.
  • Familiarity with GIS shapefiles, spatial datasets, or GIS software (e.g. QGIS or ArcGIS) is desirable.
