The Driver is responsible for providing reliable and safe driving services for UNESCO staff, officials, and visitors in Dar-es-Salaam. The role includes vehicle maintenance, ensuring compliance with local driving regulations, and occasional assistance with office administrative tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Drive UNESCO staff, officials, visitors and authorized personnel using official/project vehicles ensuring reliable and safe driving services
  • Meet official personnel and visitors at the airport and facilitate basic visa and customs formalities when required
  • Translate in local language for the Head/Director of the Office and/or official personnel using the vehicle when necessary
  • Drive vehicle on field trips as required
  • Ensure cost-savings through proper day-to-day use and maintenance of the assigned vehicle including daily vehicle logs, timely minor repairs, arrangements for major repairs, oil changes, tire, brake and water level checks, and car washing
  • Provide inputs to preparation of vehicle maintenance plans and reports
  • Arrange for vehicle inspection and repair at officially designated workshops and check vehicle before and after workshop visits
  • Ensure availability of all required documents and supplies in the vehicle including insurance, registration, vehicle logs, office directory, maps, first aid kit, and spare parts
  • Keep track of insurance and other tax formalities and report accidents timely and accurately
  • Assist in installation and use of HF, VHF radio and satellite phone in the vehicle
  • Deliver and collect mail, documents and other items as required
  • Perform other duties such as photocopying, binding, filing assistance, and paying some office bills when not driving
  • Undertake duties of other drivers when they are on leave
  • Perform additional activities to ensure success of the work team

Requirements

  • Minimum High school certificate
  • Valid national driver’s license
  • Passengers Service Vehicle driving courses from reputable institutions are an advantage
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant working experience
  • Fluency in English and Kiswahili is required (oral and written)
  • Proven capacity to drive vehicles in a safe manner consistent with local regulations and strong communication skills
  • Experience in driving a variety of cars and models of vehicles
  • Skills in minor vehicle repairs
  • Knowledge of radio, email, telephone, and other applications
  • Knowledge of driving UN vehicles rules and regulations is an added advantage
