See your match score & applyThe Senior Programme Management Officer supports UNEP's Industry and Economy Division in advancing sustainable materials management, circular economy, and life cycle approaches. The role involves preparing scientific studies, strengthening the science-policy interface, managing partnerships, overseeing budget and staff, and promoting gender mainstreaming within the unit.
Responsibilities
- Supports the preparation and review of scientific studies, assessments and knowledge products of the International Resource Panel on sustainable use and management of natural resources and materials and their environmental impacts.
- Provides methodological advice on life cycle approaches, including informing material footprint and circularity metrics to engage different industrial sector and finance stakeholders.
- Ensures that relevant research and analysis undertaken within and outside the unit integrate consideration of competing priorities across all stakeholders along the entire life cycle to enable wider policy relevance in practical contexts.
- Strengthens the science–policy interface on resource and material production and consumption in global, regional and national policy processes.
- Leverages opportunities to inform the policy and business discourse on sustainable consumption and production, circular economy, sustainable management of resources and materials through UNEP knowledge networks and global and regional partnerships on sustainable consumption and production, and circular economy.
- Provides Secretariat support to science bodies, networks and partnerships, to enable a stronger science policy interface in dealing with sustainable management of resources and materials, sustainable consumption and production and circular economy.
- Increases usability and access of users to scientific data, analytics and knowledge products related to sustainable materials management, circular economy and life cycle approaches.
- Strengthens the knowledge management capacities of the Unit and Branch on circular economy and sustainable consumption and production and engages in UNEP and UN-wide efforts.
- Ensures implementation of gender mainstreaming guidelines by assessing implications for women and men of any planned actions in the context of the initiatives supported by the Unit.
- Oversee implementation and coordination of activities related to budget and funding, including programme/project preparation, submissions, progress reports and financial documentation.
- Ensures effective utilization, supervision and development of staff; guides, evaluates and mentors staff and strategically leverages partnerships.
- Leads team members efforts to collect and analyze data and provides insight to identify trends or patterns for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
- Performs other duties as required.
Requirements
- Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in natural resources science, natural resource management, environmental science is required.
- A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.
- A minimum of ten (10) years of proven and demonstrable experience in providing science based and policy relevant advice at country level on sustainable consumption and production and circular economy, based on life cycle approaches, is required, of which at least five years should be in an international role.
- Experience in mobilizing resources for projects with budgets exceeding USD 5 million is required.
- Experience in managing international teams of five (5) persons or more is required.
- Experience in data analytics or managing large scientific datasets is desirable.
- A demonstrated publication record in peer-reviewed journals on scientific analysis related to natural resource use and management is required.
- English is required at UN Level III proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
- French is desirable at UN Level II proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
