See your match score & applyThe Analyste juridique provides legal assistance to national lawyers of the Special Advocates Corps supporting the Special Criminal Court in the Central African Republic. The role involves legal research, strategic procedural advice, capacity building, and institutional cooperation to strengthen the justice system and support the fight against impunity.
Responsibilities
- Conduct in-depth legal research and analysis in Central African law.
- Conduct research and analysis in international criminal law, international humanitarian law, and international human rights law.
- Analyze jurisprudence and practices of international and hybrid jurisdictions.
- Assist defense lawyers in drafting briefs, motions, reports, and other legal documents.
- Maintain a registry of legal productions of the Special Advocates Corps (CSA).
- Establish and manage a filing and document management system.
- Develop tools for collecting and monitoring case-related information.
- Ensure legal monitoring and dissemination of relevant developments.
- Contribute to identifying and capitalizing on best practices and lessons learned.
- Provide legal advice on substantive and procedural issues.
- Support interpretation of applicable national and international law.
- Assist defense teams in analyzing evidence, testimonies, and expert reports.
- Monitor procedural developments to identify major legal issues related to defense rights.
- Contribute to preparing defense arguments and means.
- Advise lawyers on trial fairness and procedural guarantees.
- Provide technical support to the CSA Chief in organizing and managing litigation files.
- Contribute to capacity building plans for national lawyers.
- Design and conduct training activities on relevant legal areas.
- Provide ongoing technical support to national lawyers.
- Facilitate mentoring between national and international practitioners.
- Promote experience sharing and learning by doing.
- Support gradual transfer of specialized skills in international crimes and complex procedures.
- Support collaboration mechanisms between national and international lawyers.
- Strengthen cooperation between CSA and CPS organs.
- Enhance working relations with the Central African Bar and other partners.
- Contribute to establishing a transparent and competency-based system for lawyer designation.
- Develop tools and procedures to improve CSA institutional effectiveness.
- Promote national ownership of methods, tools, and best practices developed for CPS support.
- Contribute to sustainability of achievements and continuity of national capacities after international support withdrawal.
- Perform other duties as necessary for efficient functioning of the Office and Organization.
Requirements
- A Master's Degree or equivalent in law, public international law, international criminal law, international humanitarian law, or international human rights law is required, OR a Bachelor's Degree in the mentioned fields with two additional years of relevant professional experience.
- Minimum 2 years (with Master's) or 4 years (with Bachelor's) of relevant professional experience in criminal justice, including experience as a defense lawyer, legal advisor, or specialized assistant in an international, hybrid, or national jurisdiction on international crimes cases.
- Proven knowledge of the Romano-Germanic legal system and criminal procedure within this system is required.
- Good knowledge of computer tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Internet, etc.) is required.
- Experience in defense of accused persons of international crimes in national, international or hybrid jurisdictions, preferably in conflict, post-conflict or developing countries is desirable.
- Holding a certificate of aptitude to the profession of lawyer in a Romano-Germanic legal system is desirable.
- Experience working in a multicultural environment is desirable.
- Experience outside the candidate's country of nationality or in peacekeeping operations context is desirable.
- Excellent legal research and analytical skills, including the ability to evaluate and consider information from multiple sources is desirable.
- Excellent writing skills and experience drafting legal documents in French is desirable.
- Experience in identifying and determining best practices and lessons learned is desirable.
- Fluency in French, both oral and written, is required.
- Good knowledge of spoken and written English is desirable.
