Regional Gender Statistics Specialist

The Regional Gender Statistics Specialist will oversee the regional implementation of the Women Count initiative, providing technical leadership, knowledge and capacity development services to regional and national partners to advance gender statistics and SDG monitoring. The role involves managing the regional project, building partnerships, and leading knowledge generation in gender statistics and SDGs monitoring.

Responsibilities

• Manage and oversee the implementation of Making Every Woman and Girl Count (Women Count) at the regional level
• Lead the planning of the regional project and activities to ensure timely and comprehensive implementation of Women Count
• Ensure implementation follows strict quality standards under the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics and the Principles Governing International Statistical Activities
• Align the regional project to the Regional Strategic Note (2026-29) and national priorities
• Manage programmatic and administrative management including budget planning and oversight
• Oversee regional project monitoring reports on Strategic Note and Strategic Plan indicators
• Coordinate with Headquarters to report on activities and ensure alignment with Women Count objectives
• Provide substantive technical inputs to monitoring and evaluation plans
• Oversee collection, analysis, and reporting of programme data and results
• Manage targets and monitoring of results for Women Count
• Contribute to learning, monitoring, and evaluation activities related to Women Count and UN Women Strategic Plan
• Provide strategic knowledge and capacity development services to UN Women offices and partners
• Lead establishment and implementation of UN Women’s statistical strategy in the region
• Provide technical and advisory support to UN Women’s pathfinder and non-pathfinder countries
• Produce and disseminate templates, guidance notes, and methodologies for gender statistics and SDG monitoring
• Provide technical support to countries on gender statistics and SDGs monitoring
• Establish a roster of thematic consultants and experts on gender statistics
• Lead regional capacity building initiatives for UN Women country and programme offices
• Establish and lead a regional community of practice for knowledge sharing on gender statistics
• Codify best practices and lessons learned in the regional programme
• Lead and manage UN Women’s strategic engagement at the regional level including partnerships and advocacy
• Develop and manage partnerships with governments, donors, international agencies, civil society, and private sector
• Strengthen relationships with key regional players such as ESCWA, LAS, AITRS, OIC, UNECA, and others
• Facilitate South-South and triangular cooperation on gender statistics
• Advance discussions on regional adaptation of SDG indicators
• Identify opportunities to deepen work on gender statistics with UN Regional Collaboration Platforms
• Lead and quality assure UN Women regional technical contributions to workshops and training events
• Promote and publicize UN Women’s work on gender statistics
• Lead resource mobilization efforts including concept notes and donor engagement
• Lead capacity development initiatives and deliver specialized technical training
• Advance inter-regional knowledge on best practices in data collection and gender statistics
• Lead monitoring and collection of use cases of gender statistics at the regional level
• Produce regional guidance notes on best practices and lessons learned
• Advance normative frameworks to enable collection and use of gender statistics
• Perform other duties as necessary for efficient functioning of the Office and Organisation

Requirements

• Master’s degree or equivalent in statistics, demography, economics, is required
• A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree
• At least 7 years of progressively responsible work experience in gender statistics is required
• Experience in gender equality and women's empowerment programming is required
• Experience working in the UN system is desirable
• Experience in leading and managing personnel in international settings is required
• Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) and spreadsheet and database packages; experience in handling web-based management systems is required
• Experience in the use of a modern web-based ERP System, preferably Oracle Cloud, AI, is desirable
• Experience working in the Arab States region is desirable
• Fluency in English is required
• Knowledge of another official UN language (French, Arabic) is desirable
