See your match score & applyThe Senior Sustainable Development Officer leads the development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes and policies to accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and prepare for the global sustainable development agenda beyond 2030. The role involves research, policy coordination, intergovernmental support, outreach, and management within the Division for Sustainable Development Goals of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
Responsibilities
- Leads the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects on sustainable development issues, including preparations for the 2027 SDG Summit and the global agenda beyond 2030.
- Leads research on new and emerging sustainable development issues and presents analysis with recommendations.
- Coordinates policy development and reviews assessments, evaluations, and research activities.
- Prepares various written outputs including background papers, reports, and publications on sustainable development issues.
- Provides substantive support to consultative and intergovernmental meetings, offering strategic advice and technical guidance.
- Prepares speeches and makes presentations on sustainable development issues at various forums.
- Manages and leads outreach activities to gather views from national and regional levels.
- Oversees web content and structure for areas of responsibility.
- Provides guidance to external consultants, government officials and others on sustainable development issues.
- Develops and maintains relations with senior officials of member governments and responds to requests for advice and capacity development.
- Coordinates budget and funding activities and ensures preparation of related documents and reports.
- Serves as an effective spokesperson and establishes collaborations and partnerships inside and outside the organization.
- Ensures effective utilization, supervision and development of personnel; guides, evaluates and mentors staff.
- Leads task forces, working groups, and inter-agency groups on sustainable development issues.
- Ensures gender mainstreaming in legislation, policies or programmes.
- Represents the Branch/Division at international, regional or national meetings.
- Manages unit/section both substantively and administratively.
- Leads in collection and analysis of data to identify trends for planning, decision-making, and reporting.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Requirements
- An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in sustainable development, economics, public policy, public administration, finance, natural resources management, engineering, law, social sciences or related field is required.
- A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is an advantage.
- A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in policy development, formulation and implementation of initiatives related to sustainable development issues and the 2030 Agenda, including at least five years at the international level, is required.
- Experience in policy-oriented research and preparation of reports on sustainable development issues is required.
- Experience in programme development and management in the area of economic and social development is desirable.
- Experience in intergovernmental processes, including the coordination of intergovernmental deliberation processes is required.
- Experience in coordinating multi-stakeholder engagements and processes is required.
- Experience working with senior government officials is desirable.
- Experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
- English language proficiency at UN Level II for reading, writing, listening, and speaking is required.
