Senior Interpreter, Arabic, P5

The Senior Interpreter provides high-level interpretation services in Arabic, English, and French for United Nations meetings in Nairobi. The role includes team leadership, training, and performance assessment of interpreters, as well as data analysis and reporting duties.

Responsibilities

• Provide interpretation services for up to eight meetings per week, usually no more than three hours each, of various United Nations bodies.
• Interpret speeches or statements into Arabic from English and French, and into English or French from Arabic.
• Provide interpretation services to sensitive meetings.
• Function as team leader of all interpreters assigned to a given meeting.
• Assist the Chief of Section in assessing the performance of staff and freelance interpreters.
• Assist the Chief of Section in screening, training, and examining prospective interpreters.
• Instruct and advise interpreter trainees.
• Serve as Team leader on missions and as Officer in Charge, if required.
• Assume the role of Chief of Section when designated.
• Assist with data collection, analysis, and preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, planning, and decision making.
• Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

• A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status is required.
• A master’s degree is desirable.
• Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.
• Passing the United Nations Competitive Examination for Arabic Interpreters is required.
• A minimum of ten (10) years of professional interpreting experience in international organizations, of which at least five (5) years working within the United Nations system or similar international organization is required.
• Five (5) years of relevant managerial experience in a language related area within the UN System or in similar international organization is desirable.
• Relevant language experience within the UN System or in similar international organization is desirable.
• Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
• English and French are required at UN Level IV proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
• Arabic is required at UN Level IV proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
