The Principal Coordination Officer (Managing Coordinator) is responsible for coordinating the implementation and management of UNCTAD’s projects under the Memorandum of Understanding with MOFCOM. The role involves supporting divisions, coordinating technical cooperation activities, ensuring strategic alignment, supervising project implementation, and managing programmatic and administrative tasks within UNCTAD.

Responsibilities

  • Leads, supervises and monitors the implementation of projects under his/her responsibility.
  • Coordinates the relevant work product provided by different work units and by other agencies and bodies of the United Nations system; provides programmatic/substantive reviews of the drafts prepared by others.
  • Ensures strategic alignment across divisions to enhance responsiveness to the needs of least developed (LDCs) and vulnerable countries.
  • Ensures that the outputs produced by the Branch/Service/Division maintain high-quality standards; that reports are clear, objective and based on comprehensive data.
  • Assists the Deputy Secretary-General in the review and approval of the proposals, determining priorities, and allocating resources for the completion of outputs and their timely delivery.
  • Undertakes or oversees the programmatic/administrative tasks necessary for the functioning of the Branch/Service/Division, including preparation of budgets, reporting on budget/programme performance, evaluation of staff performance (PAS), interviews of candidates for job openings, evaluation of candidates and preparation of inputs for results-based budgeting.
  • Leads and supervises the organization of meetings, seminars, etc. on substantive issues.
  • Participates in international, regional or national meetings and provides programmatic/substantive expertise on an issue or holds programmatic/substantive and organizational discussions with representatives of other institutions.

Requirements

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in business or public administration, finance, accounting, law, social sciences or related area is required.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • A minimum of fifteen years of progressively responsible experience in program coordination and development focused initiatives, at the national and international level is required.
  • Experience in intergovernmental fora dealing with trade and development or related issues is required.
  • Experience in negotiations with both Member States and private sectors is desirable.
  • English is required at UN Level III for reading, writing, listening and speaking.
  • Either French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin) or Russian is desirable at UN Level I or II depending on language.
