The Interpreter, Arabic provides interpretation services for meetings at the United Nations Office at Nairobi, translating speeches between Arabic, English, and French. The role includes team leadership, training junior interpreters, and may involve programming duties within the Arabic Interpretation Unit.

Responsibilities

  • Provide interpretation services for up to eight meetings per week, usually of no more than three hours duration.
  • Interpret speeches or statements given in English and French into Arabic, and from Arabic into English or French.
  • Cover sensitive meetings routinely.
  • Function as team leader of all interpreters assigned to a given meeting.
  • Serve as Team Leader on missions when called upon.
  • Assist in screening, training, and examining prospective Arabic interpreters.
  • Provide guidance and coaching to junior interpreters.
  • Function as Programming Officer as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • A first level degree from a university or from an institution of equivalent status is required.
  • A Master’s degree is desirable.
  • Passing the United Nations Competitive Examination for Arabic Interpreters is required.
  • At least five (5) years of professional interpreting experience in international organizations is required.
  • Relevant language experience within the UN System may be taken into consideration in meeting the requirements of this post.
  • Experience providing accurate interpretation of a broad range of UN subjects is desirable.
  • Experience in training and coaching interpreter trainees and junior staff interpreters is desirable.
  • Experience in grading interpretation exams and/or assessing freelance colleagues' performance is desirable.
  • Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
  • English and French are required at UN Level IV for reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
  • Arabic is required at UN Level IV for reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
