The internship is located within the Population and Social Statistics Section of the Statistics Division of ESCAP. The internship is unpaid, full-time, conducted in person in Bangkok, and lasts at least three months with possible extension up to six months. Interns assist with statistical work related to gender, population, migration, disability, and civil registration statistics, support capacity-building activities, and contribute to communication and event organization.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with work on gender statistics, population and housing census, migration, displacement and statelessness statistics, disability statistics, population registers, citizen data, the regional Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) initiative, and other related areas as required.
  • Conduct literature reviews on statistical frameworks, indicators, case studies and country practices related to the aforementioned areas.
  • Contribute to drafting background papers, presentations, blogs and technical documents.
  • Support the organization and servicing of meetings and events, including Expert Group Meetings, Regional Steering Group meetings, seminars, trainings and workshops (e.g. preparation of materials, note-taking, and follow-up).
  • Provide support to capacity-building activities for countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
  • Support communication activities related to the work of the section, including newsletters, websites and online platforms.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent).
  • No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset.
