The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) offers an internship opportunity in the Policy, Intergovernmental and Partnerships Section (PIPS) within the Office of the Chief of Staff. The intern will support the development and promulgation of common United Nations Security Management System policies and contribute to strategic planning and security-related knowledge products. The internship is full-time, unpaid, and designed to be in-person in New York.

Responsibilities

  • Produce minutes of IASMN-related discussions and other meetings.
  • Produce weekly briefings on relevant global security developments.
  • Conduct research to respond to queries on various security policy issues.
  • Contribute to developing knowledge products on security for UNSMS personnel, including summary papers, handbooks, infographics, and webinars.
  • Research existing and potential donors/partners and key security-related funding trends.
  • Update the digital database capturing donor priorities, funding trends, and donor intelligence relevant to UNDSS’s mandate.
  • Support donor meetings, briefings, and advocacy events by drafting background notes, preparing presentations, and contributing to follow-up actions.
  • Fulfill other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or have graduated with a university degree (Bachelor's, Master's or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent).
  • Completed online application including Cover Note and Personal History Profile.
  • Cover Note must include: Title of degree currently pursuing; Graduation Date; IT skills and programmes proficient in; Top three areas of interest; Explanation why best candidate for this internship; Explanation of interest in the United Nations Internship Programme.
  • Personal History Profile must include all past work experiences, IT skills, and three references.
  • Applicants must not be child or sibling of a staff member assigned to the same work unit or under direct/indirect supervision of that staff member.
  • Adhere to all applicable UN rules, regulations, instructions, procedures, and directives.
  • Provide the receiving department with copies of all materials prepared during the internship; UN entitled to all property rights related to materials produced.
  • Respect impartiality and independence of the UN; not seek or accept instructions from any government or external authority.
  • May not communicate confidential information to external sources without authorization; obligations continue after internship ends.
  • Refrain from conduct adversely reflecting on the UN or engaging in incompatible activities.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications including MS Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Proficiency in written and verbal communication, including ability to prepare reports and presentations.
  • Fluency in English (oral and written) is required.
