The internship position at UNCTAD's International Investment Agreements Section offers exposure to research, intergovernmental meetings, and technical assistance related to investment treaties and policies. The internship is full-time, unpaid, and can be conducted in-person or remotely, focusing on supporting data collection, research, meeting organization, and capacity-building activities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in collecting data on International Investment Agreements (IIAs) including bilateral investment treaties and treaties with investment provisions for databases and reporting.
  • Conduct research on recent investment policy trends and developments, including monitoring national and international policy developments.
  • Update mapping of IIAs in line with UNCTAD’s Investment Policy Framework for Sustainable Development.
  • Conduct mapping of other IIA features including emerging issues such as investment facilitation and cooperation.
  • Conduct background research and help finalize IIA Issues Notes on specific topics related to IIAs and investor-State dispute settlement (ISDS).
  • Assist with the organization and preparation of UNCTAD’s intergovernmental processes and expert meetings.
  • Assist with invitations, confirmations, and inputs for speech writing and presentations by UNCTAD senior staff.
  • Conduct background research and analysis for technical assistance delivery including advisory work and model treaty commentary.
  • Assist with the organization of capacity-building activities including preparation of slides, exercises, and background material for training and workshops.
  • Assist with proofreading and editing of publications.
  • Assist with updating the Investment Policy Hub website and use of social media, tweeting, and webinars.
  • Prepare inputs for reporting on programme activities.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).
  • Should be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, including willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme.
  • Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
  • The field of study should be in the same area as the work of the internship you are applying for.
  • Fluency oral and written in English is required for the internship.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset.
  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
  • Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
  • Interns must observe all applicable rules, regulations, instructions, procedures and directives of the Organization.
  • Interns must provide the receiving departments/offices with a copy of all materials prepared during the internship and assist in securing property rights for the UN.
  • Interns must respect the impartiality and independence required of the UN and not seek or accept instructions from any external authority.
  • Interns may not communicate any non-public information to external sources without authorization and may not use such information for personal gain.
  • Interns must refrain from any conduct that would adversely reflect on the UN or the receiving department/office and not engage in incompatible activities.
