The internship is in the Geneva office of the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS). The intern will assist in organizing international meetings, conduct research and draft documents related to mine action and humanitarian disarmament, support engagement with the humanitarian community, and contribute to communications and administrative tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the organization of the 30th International Meeting of Mine Action National Directors and United Nations Advisers (NDM-UN30) scheduled for April 2027 in Geneva.
  • Conduct research and draft documents related to UNMAS advocacy priorities including International Humanitarian Law and risk management.
  • Draft documents on humanitarian disarmament related to various conventions such as APMBC, CCM, CCW, and CRPD.
  • Support engagement with the humanitarian community and UNMAS role as Global Coordinator for mine action within the Global Protection Cluster.
  • Analyze and present information on the humanitarian impact of explosive ordnance in conflict and post-conflict settings.
  • Draft various documents including analysis, letters, background notes, summary records, and report inputs.
  • Monitor Human Rights Council deliberations on the impact of anti-personnel mines on human rights.
  • Attend meetings of interest to UNMAS and provide verbal and written briefing notes.
  • Contribute to day-to-day team tasks including administration.
  • Prepare social media posts in accordance with the office communications strategy.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
  • Pursuing a degree in areas related to humanitarian affairs or mine action.
  • Computer literate in standard software applications including MS Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, including willingness to understand and be tolerant of different opinions and views.
  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience but must have a field of study closely related to the internship.
  • Good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.
  • Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts is desirable.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of French is required.
