Editor, English

The English Editor is responsible for editing specialized or technical texts to ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion, and conformity with United Nations standards. The role involves rewriting, abridging, restructuring texts, consulting with author departments, verifying facts, and assisting in manuscript preparation within the Knowledge Management Services of ESCWA.

Responsibilities

• Edits texts of a specialized or technical nature to ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity with United Nations standards, policy and practice.
• Carries out more extensive editing including rewriting, abridging and restructuring texts for readability and logical sequence.
• Consults with author departments and carries out research to clarify ambiguities and rectify substantive errors, verifying accuracy of facts, figures, references and quotations.
• Checks edited version against the original draft, redrafts unclear passages and inserts omitted passages.
• Provides authors with information on editorial policy and assists in manuscript preparation.
• Makes effective use of relevant language technologies and tools and suggests improvements.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

• A first level university degree from a university or institution of equivalent status is required.
• A minimum of two (2) years of experience in English editing is required.
• A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a broad range of subjects dealt with by the regional commission: social, economic, financial, administrative, scientific and technical with a recognized specialization in a particular substantive, technical or administrative area is required.
• A minimum of two (2) years of experience in editing within the United Nations is desirable.
• English language proficiency at UN Level IV in reading, writing, listening, and speaking is required.
