Scientist (Climate Change)

This position is within the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) under NATO, focusing on climate change and security research. The incumbent will support the Climate Change and Security Programme by analyzing climate data and assessing its impacts on NATO's defence across military domains.

Responsibilities

• Support the programme of work investigating Climate Change impacts on NATO defence across all military domains.
• Execute research activities supporting the Climate Change and Security Programme in strategic NATO operational environments.
• Leverage climate data including Global and Regional Climate Models to assess impacts of future climate on five military functional areas for NATO.
• Elaborate studies about NATO defence in future physical operating environments, including extreme regions such as the Arctic.
• Revise internal reports and contribute to authoring scientific articles for international peer-reviewed journals.
• Support organization and execution of NATO workshops and conferences.
• Establish Multi-National Projects relevant to climate change.
• Develop proposals for external funding from National R&D agencies, NATO Multi-National projects, or European funding mechanisms.
• Lead or support organization of Table-Top exercises and wargames focused on Climate Change and Security scenarios.
• Collaborate closely with projects beyond the Climate Change and Security Programme as required.

Requirements

• Proven expertise in climate science and related disciplines, data science or engineering.
• Research record evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and technical reports.
• Proven experience in defence analysis, including knowledge of modern military capabilities and problems.
• Proven ability to work with standard software and operating systems (e.g. Linux, Windows, MS Office, Python, C/C++, MATLAB, R, SQL).
• MSc degree in climate sciences, atmospheric sciences, marine environmental sciences, physics, engineering, data science, defence studies, or related field, with at least 5 years post-MSc experience as Scientist or Analyst focusing on climate data and projections.
• Or PhD in the above fields with at least 2 years post-PhD related experience as Scientist or Analyst focusing on climate data and projections.
• Thorough knowledge of one of the two NATO languages (English or French), both written and spoken; some knowledge of the other is desirable.
