The Computational Linguist supports the Deputy Head, Linguistic Services and Digital Transformation Lead in developing strategies and managing linguistic data lifecycle, ensuring quality standards and assisting clients with AI-based linguistic technology. The role involves advising on IT tools, managing AI-based Machine Translation systems, coordinating projects, and maintaining knowledge management within NATO's Linguistic Services.

Responsibilities

  • Advise on the selection and use of IT tools suitable for Linguistic Services.
  • Continuously adapt AI-based Machine Translation solutions with relevant multilingual data.
  • Keep up with developments in AI-based tools such as Neural Machine Translation and Large Language Models.
  • Ensure best practices are in place in Linguistic Services and provide training to HQ staff.
  • Coordinate design, set-up, administration, maintenance and back-up of CAT/NMT systems with NATO entities.
  • Independently solve technical issues or automate tasks on the translation tool server.
  • Participate in translation-tools acquisition process including bid evaluation, testing, budgeting, implementation and maintenance.
  • Prepare yearly budget for Linguistic Services’ language technology requirements.
  • Manage library of procedures and tool settings documents and upkeep Linguistic Services intranet.
  • Manage access to linguistic data and portals for NATO staff.
  • Ensure compliance with NATO’s Information Knowledge Management Strategy.
  • Coordinate with Linguistic Services, NATO Communications & Information Agency and ICT Management to ensure technical compliance.
  • Maintain network of contacts within international AI-tools specialists community and attend related events.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Successfully completed university-level training in translation or hold a degree in a relevant discipline with proven translation capabilities.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in administering database-supported tools, processes and content.
  • Experience in the specific requirements of translation processes and computer-assisted translation (CAT) software.
  • Experience in implementing an AI-based Machine Translation system in a language department.
  • Possess minimum levels of NATO’s official languages (English/French): V (“Advanced”) in both.
  • Excellent communication skills coupled with good knowledge of linguists’ technical needs and expectations (considered an advantage).
  • Experience developing easy-to-follow, illustrated procedures for IT processes (considered an advantage).
  • Experience in managing CAT tools in an international public administration (considered an advantage).
