The Engineer, Electrical at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is responsible for analyzing and advising on the planning, design, construction and maintenance of major electrical engineering systems and facilities, including power substations, distribution networks, lighting, and building management systems. The role involves reviewing project documents, conducting technical studies, and providing technical inputs to ensure the successful implementation of electrical engineering projects.
Responsibilities
- Analyze and advise on the planning, design, construction and maintenance of major electrical systems and building automation facilities such as power distribution networks, lighting, building management systems (BMS), emergency power installations, and related infrastructure needed for the project.
- Evaluate, review and revise project documents, and analyze design specifications included in project proposals for accuracy, soundness, feasibility and cost.
- Review and submit for approval technical design drawings and specifications, owner's reports, monthly design and construction invoices, master cost breakdowns, general conditions estimates, and labor cost reports.
- Review and approve weekly and monthly project reports from project design consultants and contractors.
- Recommend solutions to unusual engineering problems.
- Conduct technical studies on engineering topics, developing guidelines for the general planning and maintenance of programs and facilities.
- Provide technical inputs regarding engineering design issues affecting proposed structures, taking into account factors such as estimated power load, electrical safety, energy efficiency, integration of BMS networks, temperature fluctuations, and nature of electronic/electrical materials to be used.
- Keep abreast of significant trends and the development of improved methods and equipment through relevant engineering literature.
- Lead efforts of team studying critical problems relating to design or construction of systems and facilities and make recommendations for resolution of problems in specialized areas.
- Participate in planning missions, serving as technical adviser to committees or international meetings.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Requirements
- Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or other related field is required.
- A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in electrical engineering or related area related to large-scale construction or renovation projects is required.
- Experience in both construction management and design within the electrical engineering field is desirable.
- Experience in design review and construction management for Building Management Systems (BMS) is desirable.
- English language proficiency at UN Level II in reading, writing, listening and speaking is required.
