This internship provides a valuable opportunity for a qualified student or recent graduate to gain practical experience in international civil aviation, focusing on standards development and regulatory frameworks related to operational safety. The intern will support the Operational Safety Section of the Air Navigation Bureau in various tasks including research, document review, data analysis, and support for ICAO bodies.
Responsibilities
- Conduct research on assigned topics across relevant areas of specialization using multiple sources and present findings for internal review.
- Assist Technical Officers in reviewing documents, identifying key issues, similarities, inconsistencies, and gaps.
- Support preparation of draft background papers, studies, reports, presentations, and other technical documents for panels and working groups.
- Contribute to the review and update of ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) and associated guidance material.
- Assist Technical Officers in supporting the Assembly, panels, working groups, and other ICAO bodies.
- Support preparation of draft replies to correspondence from States, international organizations, and other stakeholders.
- Conduct research and analysis on existing applications and tools.
- Support data analysis activities related to existing applications.
- Assist in the development or improvement of data pipelines for application enhancement.
- Contribute to AI-related tasks, including prompt engineering and related activities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Candidates must have completed or be enrolled in a degree programme related to the work of the Operational Safety (OPS) Section.
- Relevant fields of study include Air Transport Management, Aviation Management, Human Factors, Aviation Engineering, Aerospace Systems, Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, Flight Operations, Aviation Safety, Human Factors, Dangerous Goods, Instrument Flight Procedures, Data Science, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence.
- Fluent reading, writing and speaking abilities in English are essential.
- A working knowledge of any other ICAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is desirable.
- Excellent research, writing, and communication skills in English.
- Ability to work as part of a diverse team.
- Strong interest in aviation regulation, international standards, and safety oversight.
- Interns receive a stipend according to ICAO policy but must cover travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses.
- Internship duration is between 3 and 12 months, full-time, five days a week.
- Interns are not eligible for other employment within ICAO during the internship.
- Interns must carry out duties with loyalty, discretion, and conscience, following official instructions.
- A work permit may be required to work in Canada as an intern.
