The Protection/Human Rights Officer supports the implementation of protection and human rights activities in support of the Mission’s mandate. The role involves monitoring, reporting, analysis, coordination, and engagement activities relating to protection of civilians and human rights within the Mission area in a complex and high-risk operational environment.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the implementation of protection and human rights activities in support of the Mission’s mandate and operational priorities.
  • Assists in monitoring, documenting, analyzing, and reporting protection and human rights concerns within the Mission area.
  • Supports coordination and engagement with Mission components, host authorities, communities, civil society actors, and relevant stakeholders on protection and human rights-related matters.
  • Assists in promoting awareness and understanding of protection and human rights principles among Mission personnel and relevant stakeholders.
  • Supports information gathering, analysis, and reporting relating to protection of civilians, protection concerns, and human rights developments within the Mission area.
  • Contributes to coordination, liaison, and follow-up activities relating to protection and human rights initiatives, reporting mechanisms, and stakeholder engagement processes.
  • Supports the monitoring, documentation, analysis, and reporting of protection and human rights concerns within the Mission area.
  • Assists in gathering and analyzing information relating to protection of civilians, human rights developments, and protection-related incidents affecting affected populations and vulnerable groups.
  • Supports liaison and coordination activities with Mission components, host authorities, communities, civil society organizations, and relevant stakeholders on protection and human rights-related matters.
  • Assists in preparing reports, briefing notes, situation updates, analytical inputs, and other documentation relating to protection and human rights activities.
  • Supports awareness-raising and sensitization activities relating to protection and human rights principles among Mission personnel and relevant stakeholders.
  • Assists in monitoring trends and developments relating to protection concerns, displacement, vulnerability, and community protection issues within the Mission area.
  • Supports coordination and follow-up activities relating to protection mechanisms, referrals, stakeholder engagement, and community outreach initiatives.
  • Assists in maintaining records, databases, and information management tools relating to protection and human rights activities.
  • Supports engagement with civilian, police, and military Mission components on issues relating to protection and human rights coordination.
  • Maintains effective liaison and communication with relevant stakeholders in support of Mission protection and human rights activities.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree (Bac+5) in Human Rights, International Law, Peace and Conflict Studies, Political Science, International Relations, Social Sciences, Public Administration, Development Studies, Law, or a related field with a minimum of two (2) years of relevant professional experience in protection, human rights, monitoring and reporting, stakeholder engagement, humanitarian coordination, or field mission environments.
  • Or Bachelor's degree (Bac+3) in Human Rights, International Law, Peace and Conflict Studies, Political Science, International Relations, Social Sciences, Public Administration, Development Studies, Law, or a related field with a minimum of five (5) years of relevant professional experience in protection, human rights, monitoring and reporting, stakeholder engagement, humanitarian coordination, or field mission environments.
  • Experience in AU, UN, or other international field missions, particularly in conflict or post-conflict environments, is desirable.
  • Experience in protection monitoring, human rights reporting, community engagement, or protection coordination activities is desirable.
  • Experience supporting coordination between civilian, police, and military Mission components and external stakeholders is an added advantage.
  • Experience in drafting reports, briefing materials, analytical notes, and protection-related documentation is desirable.
  • Experience in information management, protection databases, and standard Microsoft Office applications is desirable.
  • Ability to support protection and human rights activities in complex and high-risk operational environments.
  • Good understanding of protection, human rights, protection of civilians, and community engagement principles within field mission contexts.
  • Ability to monitor, document, analyze, and report protection and human rights-related information in a clear and professional manner.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, coordination, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to engage effectively with Mission components, host authorities, communities, humanitarian actors, civil society organizations, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Good analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to support information-sharing, follow-up, coordination, and awareness activities relating to protection and human rights concerns.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and respond to evolving protection and operational requirements in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in the use of information management tools, databases, reporting systems, and standard Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, impartiality, and accuracy in handling protection and human rights-related information.
  • Proficiency in one of the AU working languages (Arabic, English, French, Kiswahili, Portuguese, and Spanish) is mandatory and fluency in another AU language is an added advantage.
