The Associate Programme Management Officer supports the Life Cycle Initiative hosted by UNEP, focusing on life-cycle approaches to sustainable consumption and production. The role involves managing technical discussions, supporting IT operations related to LCA data, conducting research, contributing to programme development, and engaging in outreach and training activities.

Responsibilities

  • Manages and engages in technical and scientific discussions with leading global experts in the field of LCA development and LCA application in policy and industry; presents the work of UNEP and the Initiative in the field of LCA in global and regional scientific conferences.
  • Ensures smooth functioning, responds to queries and resolves IT development and operations (directly or in consultation with UNEP IT functions) related to the hosting of LCA data and Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) characterization factors enabled in UNEP.
  • Carries out basic research on selected aspects of LCA projects, operations and other activities, etc., to include collecting, analyzing and presenting life-cycle data / information gathered from diverse sources.
  • Contributes to the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes and projects to enhance the use of life-cycle approaches, including LCA; monitors and analyzes specific aspects of progamme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports with substantive knowledge of life-cycle approaches; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and recommend corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow-up actions.
  • Contributes to the preparation of various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications related to the use of life cycle approaches.
  • Contributes to the organization of consultative and other meetings, conferences. to include proposing agenda topics, identifying and proposed participants, preparation of background documents and presentations, handling logistics.
  • Undertakes outreach activities; participates in the development of training workshops, seminars; participates in and makes presentations on assigned topics/activities.
  • Helps coordinate activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements) and preparation of related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget).
  • Contributes to the collection and analysis of data as well as identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Requirements

  • An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Sustainability assessment of production and consumption systems or Industrial Ecology or related field is required.
  • A first-level university degree in the relevant field in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.
  • Professional training in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), with work experience in high-impact sectors (e.g. buildings and construction; mobility; textiles; chemicals; packaging; extractives; food) is required.
  • A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in project management on applying life-cycle approaches to Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP), circular economy or related area is required.
  • Work experience in applying Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data management and formats and schemas (JavaScript Object Notation (JSON), International Reference Life Cycle Data System (ILCD); ecospold) is required.
  • Work experience in using at least one of the major software packages (SimaPro; GaBi; OpenLCA; Brightway) is required.
  • Work experience in conveying results from life-cycle approaches to policymakers and / or in the context of international organisations is desirable.
  • 1 year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable (none if successful YPP or P1 with a related degree)
