The WASH Technical Assistant supports the implementation of water, sanitation, and hygiene activities through technical, administrative, and organizational support. The role contributes to problem-solving, resource management, and sharing technical knowledge for effective project execution.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure adherence to NRC policies, tools, manuals, and guidelines.
  • Assist in implementing the WASH program portfolio according to the action plan.
  • Independently implement procedures and activities within own function or core competencies as delegated.
  • Organize and execute tasks according to priorities and standards.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge in the specialized work area to effectively support the team.
  • Take initiative to solve daily problems according to agreed procedures, priorities, and standards.
  • Prepare and develop reports as required by management.
  • Ensure proper filing of documents.
  • Facilitate and supervise community mobilization, behavior change interventions, and distributions of WASH kits.
  • Support the establishment, training, and monitoring of local WASH management structures (water point committees, sanitation committees, school hygiene clubs, etc.).
  • Contribute to identifying needs and conducting specific assessments such as CAP, WASH’Em, barrier analysis, including their design and implementation.
  • Participate in contextual definition of themes, messages, approaches, and design of WASH behavior change tools according to target groups (local authorities, management structures, participating households) on recommended NRC program themes.
  • Collect and share weekly evidence sources/means of verification for soft WASH activities (photos, success stories, testimonials, epidemiological data, distribution lists).
  • Monitor the procurement process for goods and services for soft WASH activities and provide continuous feedback on quality to the manager.
  • Contribute to needs assessment and participant targeting through data collection/supervision (e.g., hygiene practices) to ensure quality and reliability of analysis.

Requirements

  • Experience in the technical WASH field, focusing on community mobilization, awareness, and capacity building.
  • Experience with an NGO, preferably international, in an emergency humanitarian context including displaced persons sites.
  • Willingness and ability to travel and work regularly in the field and in complex and volatile contexts.
  • Fluency in French, both written and spoken, and proficiency in Swahili.
  • Mastery of local languages in the intervention area.
  • Minimum of a university degree (equivalent to BAC+3) in social sciences, local development, public health or health promotion, anthropology, or a similar field.
  • In-depth knowledge of the humanitarian context of the assigned territories and health zones.
  • Knowledge of standards, notably SPHERE.
  • Proven knowledge of behavior change theory and approaches.
  • Experience with participatory methodologies working with communities and community mobilization.
  • Proven knowledge and experience in community capacity building.
  • Good planning and activity monitoring skills.
  • Knowledge of qualitative data interpretation and analysis software is desirable.
