In the context of Radiation to Electronics (R2E) activities within CERN’s Beam Matter Interaction Physics (BMP) section, you will work on studying radiation environments and their impact on accelerator systems. Your work will focus on the analysis of radiation data with the aim of mitigating the exposure of electronic systems and improving the availability of the accelerators.
Responsibilities
- Characterising the radiation field at the CERN accelerators, experimental areas, and irradiation facilities.
- Analysing the data recorded in the CERN accelerator complex.
- Assessing the need for R2E mitigation measures to be implemented with the aim to improve the availability of CERN accelerators.
- Consolidating and improving the existing software tools for radiation level data processing and analysis.
- Analysing radiation effects characterisation and modelling aspects in electronic components, and the related implications on accelerator RHA guidelines, including both experimental and simulation activities.
Requirements
- You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State (excluding Pakistani and Lithuanian nationals for 2026 start date).
- By the application deadline, you have a master’s degree with 2 to 6 years of professional experience since graduation or a PhD with a maximum of 3 years of professional experience since graduation.
- You are not eligible with only a bachelor’s degree.
- You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
- Experience in the field of radiation-matter interaction physics and radiation level measurements.
- Familiarity with radiation effects on electronics, including modelling and testing aspects.
- Experience with data analysis software tools for applied physics (e.g., Python, SQL).
- Experience with Monte Carlo codes would be an advantage.
- Your studies focused on Applied Physics, Electronics Engineering.
- Knowledge of Radiation measurement and monitoring techniques.
- Familiarity with Experimental data interpretation and validation methods.
- Basic Data processing and analysis skills (e.g. Python).
- Ability to write technical documentation and reports.
- Problem-solving mindset and ability to efficiently learn new tools.
- Excellent team-working attitude, with colleagues from different backgrounds and fields.
- Good communication skills, both written and oral.
- Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.
