Contribute to the operation and evolution of the Large Hadron Collider’s cryogenic infrastructure by leading the development, procurement, and commissioning of radiation-tolerant cryogenic instrumentation. Improve system availability and robustness by replacing industrial pressure sensors not suited for radiation environments with upgraded rad-tolerant sensors.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out R&D on cryogenic instrumentation.
  • Validate and test radiation-tolerant cryogenic instrumentation.
  • Manage procurement, testing, and commissioning of sensors and electronics.
  • Replace non-qualified industrial sensors to improve system reliability and availability.
  • Support integration, performance analysis, and technical documentation.

Requirements

  • You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State (excluding Pakistani and Lithuanian nationals for 2026 start date).
  • By the application deadline, you have a master’s degree with 2 to 6 years of professional experience since graduation or a PhD with a maximum of 3 years of professional experience since graduation.
  • You are not eligible with only a bachelor’s degree.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Testing, calibration, and validation of instrumentation sensors.
  • Performance analysis and optimisation of instrumentation systems.
  • Experience with front-end and back-end electronics, as well as real-time data acquisition systems.
  • Experience in simulation, design, and development of cryogenic instrumentation components would be an asset.
  • Your studies focused on Physicist or Nuclear Engineering.
  • A valid driving licence.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • Work in Radiation Areas.
