The Staff Officer (Data Scientist) supports the development and management of data integration pipelines from various NATO data sources into the NATO Maven Smart System (MSS) to aid planning and execution of JFCBS Operations. The role involves developing applications to support operational workflows, optimizing data pipelines for AI models, and ensuring data quality and governance.
Responsibilities
- Support the development of data utilization projects through engagement with JFCBS Divisions, identifying user problems and operational workflow degradations.
- Work independently and/or with NATO MSS Engineers to create applications to support JFCBS personnel's operational workflow.
- Build and maintain the Decision Advantage Environment (DAE) briefing tool within NATO-MSS.
- Ensure efficient data retrieval and augmentation processes to support Large Language Model (LLM) training and inference.
- Collaborate with NATO MSS Engineers to optimize data pipelines for LLM performance and accuracy.
- Develop and maintain semantic and ontology data layers to enhance data integration and retrieval.
- Implement data quality checks and validation processes to ensure data accuracy and reliability from various NATO sources.
- Adhere to data governance policies and best practices.
- Monitor and optimize the performance of data pipelines and infrastructure.
- Troubleshoot and resolve data-related issues in a timely manner.
- Create and maintain comprehensive documentation of data pipelines, processes, and infrastructure.
- Undertake deployments in support of military operations and exercises, and/or TDY assignments within and without NATO boundaries as required.
Requirements
- English – good – NATO Standard Language Proficiency 3333 (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) in accordance with NATO standard agreement (STANAG) 6001.
- University Degree or equivalent in relevant field / discipline (equivalent is Higher Secondary Education AND completed advanced vocational training in relevant field leading to a professional certification or accreditation).
- Minimum 12 months of hands-on professional experience working with enterprise data operating systems such as Palantir Foundry.
- Minimum 2 years of professional experience managing enterprise data within digital transformation and data analytics initiatives.
- Minimum 2 years professional experience using generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) frameworks, Natural Language Processing (NLP) libraries, and/or retrieval-based solutions (e.g., LLMs, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) workflows).
- Proficiency in Python or equivalent coding discipline (desirable).
- Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB) (desirable).
- Experience with data pipelines for LLM workflows, including data retrieval, augmentation and optimisation (desirable).
- Experience with semantic and ontology data layers and their application in data integration and retrieval (desirable).
- Experience writing and maintaining coding and software documentation (desirable).
- Completion of relevant courses/training (desirable).
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
- Required to pass a medical examination before employment contract offer.
