The Associate Information Management Officer supports data management, analysis, and visualization to aid decision-making processes within UNOCHA's Regional Bureau for Africa. The role involves managing data governance, developing databases, producing analytical reports, and supporting emergency response information management.
Responsibilities
- Act as the main focal point for all data management activities and processes within UNOCHA ROWCA.
- Compile, clean and harmonize datasets across thematic areas and countries in coordination with country offices, clusters and partners; ensure data acquisition for early warning, disaster tracking and humanitarian snapshots.
- Develop and implement databases and data collection systems; support analytical strategies to improve statistical efficiency and overall data quality.
- Support needs assessments and analytical studies applying rigorous methodologies for data collection, sampling and quality assurance.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of analytical frameworks and data models for regional analysis projects.
- Support development and integration of data standards into local systems and processes.
- Produce high-quality analytical reports, dashboards and visual summaries translating complex data into actionable information for technical and non-technical audiences; contribute to regional analytical products.
- Design and implement communication campaigns to promote information management products and platforms ensuring broad partner engagement.
- Create infographics and visual products for reports, briefings, advocacy materials and presentations aligned with institutional visual identity guidelines.
- Utilize visualization technologies including interactive dashboards and AI-integrated platforms to transform complex datasets into operational insights.
- Develop information products such as online databases, data analysis tools and dashboards using business intelligence tools.
- Serve as focal point for data-related systems and coordinate their development and maintenance.
- Develop and document methodologies, workflows and QA/QC procedures to ensure accuracy and reliability of geospatial data and mapping products.
- Collaborate with technical staff and partner agencies to improve data flows, consistency and quality.
- Provide information management support remotely and on-site to country and regional offices, especially during sudden or worsening emergencies.
- Support design and implementation of capacity building initiatives on information management, emerging technologies, data protection and accountability, enhancing policy and guidance understanding.
- Stay informed of current and emerging trends, technologies and best practices in information management to recommend organizational process improvements.
- Participate in first responder mechanisms such as UNDAC to support development and smooth transition of information tools and services.
- Provide surge information management support during crises, remotely or in the field.
- Contribute to rapid assessments, flash updates and situational monitoring.
- Participate in crisis-specific working groups as needed (e.g., floods, epidemics).
- Perform other duties as required to ensure effective functioning of the office and organization.
Requirements
- Master's Degree or equivalent in computer science, data science, analytics, statistics, information management, public administration, management or related field, with 2 years of experience; or Bachelor's Degree with 4 years of experience.
- Minimum of two years (with Master's) or four years (with Bachelor's) of experience in applied analytics, business intelligence, statistics, project management, stakeholder management or related fields.
- Experience using data to support decision-making, strategy development and implementation.
- Experience with self-service analytics and data visualization tools such as MS Power BI, Qlik, Tableau or equivalents, or business intelligence tools like SAP Business Objects.
- Experience with version control tools such as Git is highly desirable.
- Experience with databases or programming languages such as SQL, Python, R is desirable.
- Recent experience working in information management in a regional UN agency office is an asset.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint is desirable.
- Fluency in French, both oral and written, is required.
- Knowledge of English is required.
