The role supports collection, analysis and use of GIS data to aid medical operational decision making within MSF OCA. The postholder manages the Missing Maps project to improve base maps in humanitarian settings and supports integration of OpenStreetMap data and GIS support for medical challenges in the field.
Responsibilities
- Support collection, analysis and use of GIS data to support medical operational decision making within MSF OCA.
- Manage Missing Maps, an open collaborative project addressing lack of accurate geo-data in humanitarian settings.
- Work closely with MSF roles within the Missing Maps consortium to increase field mapping activities and collect local level quality data for base maps.
- Drive and support integration of OpenStreetMap data created through Missing Maps.
- Develop new tools and methods such as spatial analytics to meet specific medical challenges in the field.
- Provide GIS support by acting as backup to GIS advisor for OCA.
Requirements
- Degree or post-graduate qualifications or equivalent experience in GIS, geography, environmental sciences, computer science, or a related field.
- Well-developed knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques of GIS.
- Demonstrable experience of work with GIS and/or mapping in humanitarian and public health sectors.
- Experience of the NGO sector and volunteer communities including community development / volunteer management.
- Demonstrable knowledge of GIS mapping software (e.g. ArcGIS and QGIS) and platforms (e.g. OpenStreetMap).
- Experience in data collection, organisation, management and processing of spatial/tabular data from different data sources.
- Technical knowledge in data management and spatial analysis.
- Previous experience in remote and field mapping (including mobile data collection).
- Experience with tool and / or process development.
- Strong team-working skills and experience.
- Ability to translate field needs and develop working solutions.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and experience of communicating with stakeholders at multiple levels of an organisation.
- Ability to transfer knowledge effectively and use this to train users on new systems.
- Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision and under pressure.
- Ability to prioritise tasks, multi-task and manage time well.
- Ability to work collaboratively with others including MSF staff, volunteers, and representatives from other NGOs and sectors.
- Experience in the practical use of personal IT equipment and Microsoft Office 365 suite.
- Ability to effectively collaborate and communicate within a hybrid working environment utilising Teams, SharePoint, One Drive and Yammer.
