The consultant will support UNICEF in conducting WASH conflict and peace analyses in targeted countries, develop capacity building strategies, and provide practical recommendations to integrate conflict sensitivity and peacebuilding approaches into WASH programming. The role involves desk reviews, consultations, and collaboration with UNICEF staff to enhance WASH programming in fragile and conflict-affected contexts.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare an inception report with a detailed methodology and workplan for supporting the WASH conflict analysis aligned with targeted countries and global WASH sector goals
  • Undertake a desk review on existing frameworks, strategies, assessments, conflict analyses, peacebuilding strategies, and humanitarian and development frameworks relevant to targeted countries
  • Develop and implement tailored capacity development and technical support strategies to ensure uptake of WASH Conflict and Peace Analyses findings and integration of conflict sensitivity and peacebuilding approaches into UNICEF-supported WASH programming
  • Develop actionable and practical recommendations for integrating conflict sensitivity and peacebuilding approaches into WASH programming across the whole cycle from design to reporting
  • Support targeted Country Offices in the development and implementation of context-relevant, participatory, and WASH-focused conflict and peace analyses
  • Develop and implement capacity development to support integration of conflict sensitive planning and peacebuilding approaches into the WASH sector at national and sub-national levels
  • Identify opportunities for WASH programmes to support conflict resolution, peacebuilding efforts, inclusion, social cohesion and stability
  • Develop practical recommendations, approaches, guidance, practices, and tools for UNICEF and partners to integrate conflict sensitivity, gender equality, disability, and social inclusion into WASH programme design, implementation, and monitoring and reporting

Requirements

  • An advanced university degree (master’s or higher) in one of the following fields: Conflict & peace studies or Research methods
  • At least 5 years of experience in developing and implementing conflict analysis in conflict-affected, fragile states
  • Experience of using the findings of conflict analysis to support the development and implementation of conflict sensitive and peacebuilding programming
  • Experience in developing capacity to support conflict sensitive and peacebuilding programming (i.e. training; technical support) in fragile and conflict-affected contexts
  • Field experience integrating conflict sensitivity and peacebuilding approaches in WASH and UNICEF programmes is an asset
  • Experience in working in multi-cultural background
  • Knowledge of WASH-related conflict and peace dynamics required
  • Good understanding of UNICEF’s WASH HDP nexus approach and related policies and tools
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required
  • Ability to coordinate remotely with team members and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Fluent in English
  • Fluent in French (desirable)
