As a mechanical engineer, you will participate in the enhancement of the LHCb electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) including production of new ECAL modules and re-assembly of the ECAL structure. The role involves 3D modeling, procurement, quality assurance, design work, and R&D for ECAL improvements.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare 3D models and drawings of mechanical parts and assemblies.
  • Participate in procurement and quality assurance tasks for new ECAL modules.
  • Contribute to design work for the re-assembly of the ECAL, including finite element studies of mechanical structures.
  • Participate in R&D towards the improvement of existing ECAL modules.

Requirements

  • You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State, excluding Pakistani and Lithuanian nationals for 2026 start date.
  • Maximum of 2 years of professional experience since graduation in the respective field by application deadline.
  • Highest educational qualification is either a bachelor’s or master’s degree; you must have a university degree and cannot hold a PhD.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Proven track record in designing mechanical parts and assemblies using 3D CAD tools.
  • Hands-on experience in structural simulations using finite element analysis.
  • Experience with heavy materials used as absorbers in calorimetry (lead, tungsten) is an advantage.
  • Experience with additive manufacturing, particularly metals, is an advantage.
  • Your studies focused on Mechanical Engineering.
  • Knowledge of CATIA and Ansys Mechanical software packages is an advantage.
  • Ability to work in an international multi-disciplinary team with physicists, engineers and technicians.
  • Skills to prepare comprehensive technical documentation.
  • Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.
  • A valid driving licence.
  • Willingness to work during nights, Sundays and official holidays as required.
  • Ability to work in underground installations and radiation areas.
  • Must obtain medical clearance due to occupational health risks including exposure to lead, risk of falling from heights, and electromagnetic fields.
