As a mechanical engineer, you will participate in the enhancement of the LHCb electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) including production of new ECAL modules and re-assembly of the ECAL structure. The role involves 3D modeling, procurement, quality assurance, design work, and R&D for ECAL improvements.
Responsibilities
- Prepare 3D models and drawings of mechanical parts and assemblies.
- Participate in procurement and quality assurance tasks for new ECAL modules.
- Contribute to design work for the re-assembly of the ECAL, including finite element studies of mechanical structures.
- Participate in R&D towards the improvement of existing ECAL modules.
Requirements
- You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State, excluding Pakistani and Lithuanian nationals for 2026 start date.
- Maximum of 2 years of professional experience since graduation in the respective field by application deadline.
- Highest educational qualification is either a bachelor’s or master’s degree; you must have a university degree and cannot hold a PhD.
- You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
- Proven track record in designing mechanical parts and assemblies using 3D CAD tools.
- Hands-on experience in structural simulations using finite element analysis.
- Experience with heavy materials used as absorbers in calorimetry (lead, tungsten) is an advantage.
- Experience with additive manufacturing, particularly metals, is an advantage.
- Your studies focused on Mechanical Engineering.
- Knowledge of CATIA and Ansys Mechanical software packages is an advantage.
- Ability to work in an international multi-disciplinary team with physicists, engineers and technicians.
- Skills to prepare comprehensive technical documentation.
- Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.
- A valid driving licence.
- Willingness to work during nights, Sundays and official holidays as required.
- Ability to work in underground installations and radiation areas.
- Must obtain medical clearance due to occupational health risks including exposure to lead, risk of falling from heights, and electromagnetic fields.
