See your match score & applyThe Assistant Secretary supports the smooth conduct of the work of the Policy-Making Organs, their Committees and Working Groups, facilitating effective communication between the governing bodies and the Secretariat. The role involves research, preparation of documents, coordination of meetings, and maintaining continuous contacts with Member States and Secretariat departments.
Responsibilities
- Hold initial discussions with Member States of area groups to assess their standpoints and requirements and develop best communication approaches.
- Coordinate in-house preparation and issuance of agendas for Board and Committee meetings, including study of relevant resolutions and liaison with Secretariat departments.
- Maintain continuous communication with delegations of Member States to elicit views and clarify Secretariat positions with political sensitivity.
- Assist the Director SEC/PMO in consultations conducted by the Chair of the Board of Governors and prepare summaries for Secretariat use.
- Conduct research into past practices and official records related to political, technical or procedural matters and develop guidelines for IAEA staff.
- Maintain liaison with Permanent Missions and geographical groups to coordinate preparation of candidate listings for elections and designations.
- Prepare background papers, speaking notes and procedural scenarios for the President of the General Conference and SEC-PMO and represent the Director in plenary sessions as needed.
- Prepare annual compilations of all Board decisions and General Conference resolutions and decisions for publication.
- Organize the Speakers' List for the General Conference in coordination with Member States.
- Assist members of Diplomatic Missions with questions concerning the functioning of the PMO before and during meetings.
Requirements
- Master's Degree - An advanced university degree in Public Administration, Political Science or International Relations.
- Bachelor's Degree- A university degree in Public Administration, Political Science or International Relations with at least two years of additional relevant experience might be considered in lieu of an Advanced university degree.
- A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible relevant professional experience preferably in diplomacy, multilateral negotiations and external relations in a multilateral environment.
- Excellent oral and written command of English.
- Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
