The SY-STI-BDE Section is responsible for the design, assembly, installation, and maintenance of beam-intercepting devices at CERN's accelerator complex. The role involves supporting safety-critical systems and ensuring efficient operation of CERN’s accelerators through mechanical engineering tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the purchase, storage and shipment of raw material and components.
  • Handle the conditioning of several components to be compliant with the Ultra-High Vacuum (UHV) requirements of collimators.
  • Perform the machining of simple parts based on drawings produced with CAD programs.
  • Be active on the assembly of collimators and several sub-components and its auxiliary systems.
  • Participate in the assembly of the HL-LHC beam dump systems.
  • Keep track and maintain all related documents and databases.
  • Take an active role in the installation, commissioning and maintenance of the equipment.
  • Manage the appropriate disposal/storage of radioactive parts and equipment withdrawn from the facility.
  • Provide mechanical and logistics support.
  • Contribute to mechanical support activities around different facilities at CERN.

Requirements

  • You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State, excluding Pakistani and Lithuanian nationals for 2026 start date positions.
  • By the application deadline, you have a maximum of 2 years of professional experience since graduation in a technical or administrative field.
  • Your highest educational qualification is a general secondary education diploma or a shorter non-university degree; you cannot hold a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or PhD.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Your studies focused on Mechanical Engineering.
  • Knowledge in designing mechanical components.
  • Assembling and testing precision mechanics.
  • Knowledge of CAD systems, 3D and 2D drawing.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Well-organised and accountable.
  • Ability to work in a team as well as independently.
  • Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language.
  • A valid driving licence.
  • Medical clearance is required due to occupational health risks associated with the position.
  • Ability to work in radiation areas and underground installations.
