You will help shape the next generation of normal-conducting accelerator magnets for the Future Circular Collider (FCC), from design and prototyping through industrialisation and system integration. Working with CERN teams and industrial partners, you will develop scalable manufacturing and procurement strategies and apply lessons learned from the testing, maintenance and renovation of existing accelerator magnets to the development and delivery of reliable, cost-effective FCC magnet systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop cost-effective normal-conducting magnet technologies for the FCC, from concept and modelling through prototyping and system integration.
  • Study and propose manufacturing and procurement strategies for FCC magnets, tailored to the scale of the project and targeting an efficient and effective production, installation and maintenance.
  • Plan, organise and coordinate the maintenance, repair, testing and modification of existing magnets in operation, including specific renovation campaigns, applying the experience gained to the development of FCC magnets.
  • Prepare technical specifications, reports and other engineering documentation, and communicate technical results to relevant stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanical or electrical engineering or a related field.
  • Experience in the design or construction of accelerator magnets or comparable complex electromechanical equipment.
  • Experience in analysing mechanical or magnetic measurements and using them to validate and improve designs.
  • Experience in the procurement of magnets or similar equipment, either in industry or in a laboratory, would be an asset.
  • Design and modelling of normal conducting magnets and permanent magnet systems.
  • Operation and maintenance of normal conducting magnet systems.
  • Design and analysis of mechanical structures.
  • Knowledge and application of magnetic materials, and electric insulations.
  • Construction, test and installation of electromechanical equipment and systems.
  • Takes responsibility for own actions and decisions.
  • Provides others with timely information.
  • Proposes ways to improve or streamline existing procedures, processes and methodologies.
  • Works well in groups and readily fits into a team; participates fully and takes an active role in team activities.
  • Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.
