Technologist I, Immunohematology Reference Lab, Blood Bank Trainee Program

The American Red Cross is seeking a dedicated individual to join the Blood Bank Technology Program as a Technologist I Student in the Immunohematology Reference Laboratory. This role provides hands-on learning and prepares candidates for certification, with responsibilities including donor and patient testing, inventory management, and adherence to regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

• Perform telephone consultation including receiving and completing orders for antigen negative products.
• Coordinate receipt, shipment and transport of patient and donor blood samples.
• Manage supply and reagent ordering, receiving, inspection, preparation, and quality control.
• Maintain equipment, reagents, and stock to assure quality and accuracy of laboratory test procedures.
• Perform and interpret basic donor and patient testing procedures under guidance.
• Recognize testing irregularities, identify causes, determine solutions or refer appropriately.
• Maintain accurate, legible, and complete computer and manual records.
• Successfully complete all requirements in the BBT program, pass registry/certification exams and obtain required state licensure upon graduation.

Requirements

• MLT certification or associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology; or bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester hours in medical laboratory technology or science courses including chemistry and biology.
• Must hold state license if required by the state.
• Good written and verbal communication skills to interact effectively with internal and external customers.
• Basic understanding of computer applications including Word.
• Ability to work on a team.
• May involve variable locations and some travel.
• Physical ability to stand, stretch, stoop, bend for extended periods, lift/move objects up to 50 pounds, work in walk-in refrigerator/freezers, wear protective clothing when exposed to blood and blood products.
• Ability to use a wide variety of lab or medical equipment and personal computer software for sustained periods.
