Data Analyst

The Data Analyst will support the implementation of the Social Territories Program project by developing and analyzing data products, supporting capacity building, and providing technical guidance to enhance urban policy and planning in Rio de Janeiro. The role involves data extraction, processing, georeferencing, documentation, and ensuring compliance with UN-Habitat standards.

Responsibilities

• Develop, calculate and validate variables, indicators, and other data and information products.
• Extract, process and analyse data from public databases and statistics and present them in various formats (tables, graphs, charts).
• Elaborate and/or support the creation of georeferenced information.
• Revise all documents produced related to spatial data and information.
• Participate and organize capacity building activities for UN-Habitat and government staff.
• Provide technical support to implement activities related to collection, production, analysis and management of data, information and urban indicators and support studies and research.
• Provide information for systematization and exchange of successful practices and experiences with other offices and headquarters divisions.
• Provide inputs for the identification of project risks.
• Document project processes, methodologies, and outputs.
• Ensure timely implementation of deliverables according to the work plan.
• Participate in meetings, missions, and events as required.
• Provide technical guidance on the localization of international frameworks (e.g., SDGs, New Urban Agenda).
• Maintain organized records of project activities, risks, and key documentation.
• Develop and disseminate knowledge products.
• Organize project events, workshops, and training activities.
• Ensure compliance with UN-Habitat quality standards and project requirements.
• Develop reports following ABNT guidelines aligned with UN-Habitat standards.
• Ensure adoption of ethical principles including respect for diversity and promotion of safe, inclusive learning environment.
• Perform other management-related duties assigned by the Head of Brazil Office.
• Complete all courses and training activities indicated by supervisor.
• Ensure personal security by complying with UN security mechanisms.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy, Sociology, Political Science, Administration, Geography, Economics, Urban Studies, Statistics or related fields is required.
• Postgraduate degree (Lato Sensu or Stricto Sensu) in Public Policy, Sociology, Political Science, Administration, Geography, Economics, Urban Studies, Statistics or related fields, or an additional four (4) years of relevant experience to the post, beyond the requirement.
• Minimum of six (6) years of experience in themes related to data analysis, reports and information for public policy, data visualization, data collection, processing and analysis is required.
• Progressively responsible experience in urban project/programmes related themes in Brazil is required.
• Previous experience within the UN System is desirable.
• Good computer skills in Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook and Web search engines are required.
• Knowledge of geographical information systems (GIS) software such as QGIS or ArcGIS is required.
• Good command of programming languages such as R or Python is required.
• Good handling of software, online platforms and other tools for data visualization is required.
• Experience in the management of primary data collection in the field is desirable.
• Good command of data collection platforms such as KoboToolbox or ODK is desirable.
• Basic experience with platforms for sharing programming and version control such as GitHub or GitLab is desirable.
• Good knowledge on project management methodologies is desirable.
• Completion of the security course BSAFE from UNDSS during the first month of employment is required.
• Familiarity and compliance with United Nations security mechanisms according to the Framework of Accountability for the United Nations Security Management System is required.
• Fluency in Portuguese is required.
• Working knowledge of English is desirable.
