See your match score & applyThe Liaison and Policy Officer will provide policy, analytical and liaison support to the Network Secretariat's engagement in New York, including activities related to the follow-up and review of the Global Compact for Migration (GCM). The role involves supporting intergovernmental meetings, maintaining relationships with Permanent Missions, and contributing to substantive analysis of UN activities relevant to migration.
Responsibilities
- Support the Senior Migration Policy Officer on all liaison aspects relating to the follow-up and review process of the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) and all related General Assembly resolutions.
- Contribute to the planning and implementation of activities of the Network in New York such as the preparation of briefings and outreach activities with Member States, UN entities and stakeholders in New York; contribute to the drafting and consolidation of background documents, compile and consolidate substantive inputs, monitor and analyze interventions in intergovernmental meetings and consultations.
- Maintain effective relationships with Permanent Missions in New York on Network initiatives, including the Champions initiative and provide inputs to support engagement and communication efforts.
- Participate in, and support New York-based meetings, including intergovernmental meetings and engagement with GCM Champion Member States, as delegated.
- Support the coordination of Network workstreams as relevant and provide the necessary support to their engagement in relevant multilateral processes in New York.
- Contribute to substantive analysis of UN activities relevant to the Global Compact for Migration and the UN Network on Migration; prepare analytical inputs and background materials to support engagement efforts; monitor key GCM-related discussions in the General Assembly, United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and other relevant bodies.
- Draft briefing notes, policy papers, talking points and summaries as required.
- Maintain communications with civil society, private sector, academia, and other migration actors in relation to their engagement with the UN Network on Migration.
- Perform such other duties as may be assigned.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in International Studies or a related field from an accredited academic institution with two years of relevant professional experience; or Bachelor's degree in the above fields with four years of relevant professional experience.
- Experience working within a multilateral environment, preferably within the UN system, with a good understanding of UN intergovernmental processes and coordination mechanisms.
- Experience in working with international agencies, governments and other stakeholders.
- Prior experience in organizing seminars and official UN meetings, including in collaboration with the UN system, governments and other stakeholders.
- Professional experience in migration area and excellent knowledge of existing migration and other relevant frameworks and approaches; previous direct experience in supporting GCM review is a distinct advantage.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively in a multicultural and multilingual environment.
- Demonstrated analytical, research, and drafting skills.
- Ability to establish priorities, plan and organize work, and manage multiple tasks within tight deadlines.
- Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Sound judgment, initiative and the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and web-based applications.
- Fluency in English (oral and written) is required.
- Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an advantage.
